By Shannon L Smith

Diabetes is one of the leading diseases due to which a number of people die annually all over the world. This disease occurs when the human body cannot use the glucose which is the main source of energy for the body's cells or does not use it adequately. The glucose level is controlled by the hormone insulin. For such patients, there is a special diabetes diet which is prescribed by doctors. In medical terms, diabetes diet is known as medical nutrition therapy. According to the diet, a patient is asked to eat the nutritious food in moderate amounts. The diabetes diet is not a restrictive diet if a patient takes it positively rather, it is a healthy planned diet that has fewer fats and calories. The reason for making diabetic patients stay away from high fats and calories is that these foods increase undesirable blood glucose level which can result in chronic complication like damage to the liver, heart and kidneys.

You should not eat fried foods as such foods are most likely to contain loads of fats, which is not good for a diabetic patient. Desserts should be strictly avoided as they contain a lot of sugar. Always stay away red meat, eggs and pure milk dairy products. Moreover, you should always avoid eating ice creams and taking fizzy drinks as well as artificial juices. Asides, from this if you consume alcohol, you must stop that at once.

There are certain principles that you need to follow when on a diabetes diet like; eating a lot of non-starchy vegetables and fruits. Eliminate fast food and packaged foods also take more fish and cut down on fatty meat.

All you need is a good doctor who diagnosis your disease correctly and tells you what precautions to take. He or she may prescribe the diabetes diet to follow or may refer you to a dietician.
